The third child of the Skellington clan is Edgar, who was lovingly dubbed Repeat by his two older siblings. After all, if they were stuck with nicknames, he was going to have one, too. It was immediately apparent when he was born that something wasn't quite right. Whether he was born too early or suffered some illness (whatever illness might affect a skeleton I don't know), his bones were thin and he was very small.
In spite of his sickly appearance, it was soon discovered that coddling him wasn't necessary. For one thing, he wasn't a very boistrous child. He would happily spend hours in his pen, quietly playing with his beloved fanged teddy or flying vampire doll. When he was older, his favorite activity was to sit in a corner of the kitchen and read while Sally cooked. He was often following on his mother's heels, helping her out with various chores or sitting off to the side and listening to her talk or sing.
These preferences earned him the unfortunate label of "mama's boy." He endured a certain amount of pity from many of the citizens of Halloween and even a few brutish pranks by the few other kids in the town. This all changed, however, when one year he demonstrated he was neither weak nor timid.
Edgar is quite tall and standing straight has more than a few inches over his father. As it is, he tends to stoop, so his height is roughly equal to Jack's on most days. It is thought that his hunched posture comes from constantly bending over to read books and, perhaps, as defense against knocking his skull off against the tops of doorjambs and ceiling lamps. His extreme height accentuates the fact that his bones are still very thin, having grown little in thickness since his childhood.
He likes to wear a version of the famed pinstripe suit. His jacket lacks tails and has no buttons. In place of a bat bow tie, he wears a tattered cravat. On his lapel, he wears a pin identical to the one Junior has. He has a dry cackle that few can hear without feeling a shiver go down their spine and he has a very wicked sense of humor that he reveals very rarely. He enjoys sitting in his library, studying old books and scrolls. His interest in Halloween seems almost academic, but he has a deep pride in his family and their place in preparing for the holiday.
***
On the official Nightmare Before Christmas soundtrack, there is an ending narrative in which Santa visits Jack and comments that there are "four or five skeleton children at hand/Playing strange little tunes in their xylophone band." It is often assumed that these children are Jack's. While playing around with some possible plotlines, I couldn't resist coming up with some that involved these children. What would they be like? What would they do? After that, I had the inspiration to draw out these children as I saw them in their grown state.
i love nightmare before christmas. this is a great drawing
